Carl Palazzolo

Palazzolo uses recognizable imagery in an abstract context, placing no more or less importance on any one object. Rather, the subject of his work is painting itself, and the ways in which the works evoke notions of memory, dreams and desires.

An extremely deft painter, Palazzolo almost obsessively reworks a collection of images, some from everyday objects such as fruit, Polaroids or body parts, and others from paintings including "The Daughters of Edward D. Boit" by John Singer Sargent. He integrates these elements into the composition along with an abstract vocabulary, at times obscuring the object with a stroke of the brush or a grid of dots. He manipulates the paint in a trompe l'eoil manner, fooling the eye to see a Polaroid which one believes to be taped to the picture, but in fact is painted on, teasing the viewer into believing a visible reminder, triggering familiar thoughts.

Since earning degrees in Fine Arts from Tufts and the Boston Museum School, Palazzolo has exhibited extensively with recent shows in London, New York and Boston. Originally from Connecticut, Palazzolo divides his time between New York, Houston and Maine. Palazzolo has been exhibiting with the gallery since 1994.
